Pressed Penny Guide
The Disneyland Neverland reference guide lists many of the scarcest Disneyland elongated coins or die varieties known. Generally this group of coins is known by advanced collectors as "prototype coins". However, the term is used very loosely to include production versions of coins, that for one reason or another, were never "on-stage" or available to the public. Needless to say, some of these coins were rumors or even legends before we were able to secure a scan for verification. Some still are.
"DN" or "Prototype" off-denomination coin examples are known. Usually off-denomination coins are quarter, dime or nickel variations of a native cent elongated coin. However, some variations include tokens or foreign coins etc. Such variations are not currently listed. However, collectors needing guide numbers for such coins, need only add a suffix of N, D, Q etc. to the standard guide number, e.g. DN0019P for cataloging purposes.
References to estimates of coins known to be in the hands of collectors are based on coins known by ParkPennies.com to have been sold, seen or reported by trusted sources. Readers are advised that not all coins are held by "known collectors". Also, some coins may be counted twice as they pass through the hands of different collectors and previously unreported caches of coins can surface. Die status, that is, whether or not the die is still "open" or able to press more coins, is always uncertain, until the die is known to have been canceled.
"Reserved numbers" are sometimes held for coins reported or rumored but not yet confirmed or listed. Other "Reserved numbers" are held as chronological place holders for coins that may be reported or discovered in the future. This guide is not yet definitive. If you own or are considering the acquisition of an unlisted coin believed to be a "DN" coin, please contact us to request the reserved guide number, a courtesy guide listing or our opinion of provenance.
Please excuse our informality. Although we are (repeatedly) told the preferred numismatic term is "Elongated Coins!", some rebellious, devil-may-care ParkPennies.com contributors are known to use more casual, fun terms like: pressed, flattened, crushed, squashed, rolled, mashed, smashed, stamped, squished, smushed, stretched, memory, keepsake, and souvenir to describe these fun penny (cent) novelties.
Some poor quality scans collected over the years from eBay auctions etc. have been used. We were unable to determine the image owner of one or two images. We hope the coin owners will contact us so we may give them proper credit and hopefully, obtain a better picture to share with you.

This Disney coin
is often called the "Straw Hat Mickey" or "Nifty Nineties Mickey".
Mickey Mouse is in 1890’s summer clothing, as in the 1941 Disney short, The Nifty Nineties. Interviews by Robert Hoff of key people close to this prototype
suggest that Vance Fowler may have been commissioned by Disney to provide
this coin. However, the coin was never on-stage. The artwork is well executed and done in high relief. Per the best information available to us at the time of this report: Approximately 12 are believed to exist. Reported held by only a few collectors as of 2007. Die status was reported as open.

In addition to the length of the gripper slot, which could be the result of "cleaning", there are other differences between this coin and the three dot version, the DL0003 No evidence has been found that this coin was ever
on-stage. There are very few examples of the DN0004.

small differences make this a hard coin to spot. Key is the double outlined guitar which is mostly solid on the DL0006. Due to

On both DN0006 and DL0010 Mickey’s hat is outlined and completely open at the top. On DN0006 Mickey’s right ear is slightly outlined, grip arcs over 3 dots, curl on top of "Frontier" does not touch a dot. Border dots are smaller than on
DL0010 and second dot from the right is out of alignment with the other
border dots. On DL0010 Mickey’s right ear is totally flat, grip arcs over 5 dots, curl on top of "Frontier" touches a dot, border dots are larger than on DN0006 and second dot from the right is in alignment with the other border dots. Due to the very few examples of
DN0006 available and lack of on-stage documentation it is believed that
this coin was never on-stage.

These
three coins of the Snow White group of nine lack the ©DISNEY. No evidence has been found
to support an "on-stage" appearance of this set. Anecdotal evidence leads to the
conclusion that after a few test rolls the lack of the ©DISNEY was noticed and the dies
returned to Eurolink to be reworked. Fewer than 25 of each are believed to
exist.

Interviews and research by R. Hoff support the
conclusion that these dies were engraved penny size in error, they were meant for use in the
Disneyland nickel machine.
The small penny sized die images left an unacceptable blank space
at the end of the rolled coin. Corrected dies were ordered and then the
machine was placed on-stage.
Per the best information available to us at the time of this report: It is
estimated that approximately 7 Mickeys, 10 40th Anniversary and 5 Minnie’s native coin examples are believed to be in the hands of collectors. Examples also are known
to exist on non-native coins.
Die status is unknown. Very

coins, pressed on the prototype die shaft, have a train image that is
difficult to recognize. Replacements DL0153 -DL0156 reduced the view to
just the locomotive and tender while increasing the image size. Reported
by well known private collector. Per the best information available to us at the time of this report: Die status was reported as canceled.
