This elongated coin guide features "pressed pennies" by The Mouse that may represent the purest form of Disneyland souvenir pressed pennies ever issued. The elongated coins listed here are from dies engraved on-site at The Original Disneyland Resort, Anaheim, by the Disneyland Arcade Shop Technicians and partner krafts. These elongated coins and tokens are usually issued to recognize special Disneyland Resort Cast Members or Special Events.
This Disneyland Shop Elongated Coin Guide in some respects, is an exclusive subset of scarce coins that are part of the "CM" Cast Member and Special Events Guide. It is possible and appropriate that once this guide is definitive, complete and chronological, the coins should become part of the CM Guide. Therefore, advanced collectors may wish to include these coins as a key part of their "CM" collections. Any DS coins that meet DN or TR guide criteria, we feel, should be included as part of those respective guides as well.
Collectors will notice that Arcade Shop die engraving has greatly evolved from the first, very basic, dot matrix style text backstamps. We feel if the direction of "in-house" die engraving continues as it has so far, the Arcade Shop may become the first choice source for future in-park penny press dies.
These early exceptional examples of actual Disneyland engraved coins may represent both a beginning and the future of all Disney elongated coins or maybe just a limited venture. Whatever the future brings, we feel these coins already have a great pedigree and could be key additions to advanced collections.
Note: As of the time of this writing, in 2008, all elongated coin backstamps or "back" dies in the Disneyland Resort were also engraved on-site by Disneyland Arcade Shop Technicians. If it is your wish to collect elongated coins bearing images engraved at Disneyland, do consider the many coins with backstamps.
Because the coins in this guide section are often extremely scarce and information about them is hard to come by... We need your help! Please share any additional information you have about "DS" guide coins by contacting us anony-mousely if you wish.

DS0001-Current
DS0001 Vertical elongated penny image engraved by the Disneyland Arcade Shop at The Disneyland Resort. Very faint engraving, ARCADE MECHANICS, Mickey Mouse with hat and scarf winter ware, MERRY CHRISTMAS 2004. (A Mickey ears symbol, ooo, is used as the "00" in 2004.) Last line believed to read "Disneyland". No gripper, no border small image. Early dot matrix style of acid engraving. Believed to be the first elongated obverse die ever engraved "in-house" by Disney. Very similar to the DS0002, except penny sized image.
Backstamp: Known examples have been blank
This early example shows the dot matrix style of acid etching that was used to engrave the first Disney backstamp die for the DL0251 Main Street USA elongated nickel. (The DL0251 single die machine used a back die rather than a back roller.)
Reportedly, this coin was informally introduced to Arcade Shop Cast Members during the 2004 Christmas Season, following the first Disney backstamp issued in July of 2004. The coin was well received and set the stage for future elongated coins engraved at the Disneyland Resort. Feedback given for this coin was used to improve the following Arcade Shop issued elongated coins and elongated coin backstamps.
DS0002 Vertical elongated quarter image engraved by the Disneyland Arcade Shop at The Disneyland Resort. No gripper, no border large image. Early dot matrix style of acid engraving. Very similar to the DS0001, except quarter sized image.
Backstamp: Known examples have been blank
This coin *may* have been made within days of the DS0001. Some early coins have been reported to have been pressed on the backs of known onstage coins. Possibly the onstage dies were used to pull these engravings though the press, as they do not have coin grips.
DS0003 Horizontal elongated penny image engraved by the Disneyland Arcade Shop at The Disneyland Resort. ALEXANDER D. ROSIE, RECON ROSIE, THE SECRETE SQUIRREL, dot matrix, star border, grip right.
Backstamp: A nickel example is known to be blank.
Backstamp: A copper and a steel cent example is known to have four repeating DISNEYLAND's.
This coin is just too cool! Trusted sources told Robert Hoff of ParkPennies.com that this coin was made as a gift to Alex Rosie, Arcade Manager, when leaving Disney after overseeing some major advances in the Arcade Mechanics kraft. Mr. Rosie, a former Marine, was well respected and liked by all that have reported to us about this coin.

Editor's note: We are often reminded that the preferred numismatic term is "Elongated Coins". However, as the rebellious, risk taking, devil may care ParkPennies.com contributors that we are, temptation often gets the better of us. As a result, you may see the more casual, fun terms like: pressed pennies, flattened pennies, crushed pennies, squashed pennies, rolled pennies, mashed pennies, smashed pennies, stamped pennies, squished pennies, smushed pennies, stretched pennies, memory pennies, keepsake pennies, flat pennies, and souvenir medallions to describe these fun penny souvenirs.
