Something that may be of interest to readers is the elongated souvenir design changes that took place at the Tokyo Disneyland Resort and Disneyland, Anaheim in about 2006. As you can see, by the medals pictured here, Tokyo Disneyland Resort takes a good deal of pride in their medals. The engraving, designs and borders are, in the opinions of many collectors, among the best engraving seen in vended pressed souvenirs today. Also, coins of the Month were introduced the year before and special event coins are now even more common for TDL parades, promotions etc. It seems Tokyo Disneyland really made a commitment and ran with it.
At about the same time, The Original Disneyland in Anaheim, where Disney elongated coins were first introduced and in the eyes of many, perfected, was winding down from The 50th Anniversary. One of their most successful collector series of elongated coins ever issued at any Disney park, The Magical Milestones pressed penny collection of 51 coins just came off-stage. Ironically, when the Magical Milestones coins were replaced by coins which were for the most part, very plain, "stock art" coins often without any borders. This trend has caused some collectors in the United States to take a greater interest in Tokyo Disneyland medals, referring to the coins issued up to and including the Magical Milestones as "Vintage" and later Anaheim issues as "Post-50th". However, rumors abound that borders were omitted from recent Anaheim issues to ease the conversion from pressed pennies to pressed nickels or tokens. That could bump up the competition and the quality of pressed souvenirs yet another notch... for collectors.
